Cut & Run Exhibition - The Opening

Here are a few shots from the opening night of the Cut & Run Exhibition at Kemistry.
The show was a mix of paintings, prints and sculptures created by Me, Ryan Chapman, Matthew Dent and Matt Bromley and was all planned and put together by Ryan.

Here are my acrylic paintings from the show, on a mixture of canvas and canvas paper. My images centered around revenge, murder, anxiety and loss. People being plagued by heinous acts they commited, and the ghosts that haunt them. I painted a fair few severed heads for good measure.

Here are Ryan Chapman's fantastic paintings. Ryan's work focussed around a series of characters that cut away from their jobs and normal lives, and ran off to persue what made them happy. He made some incredible bottled ships to accompany his work.

Matthew Dent created an amazing story through his series of prints, based around the concept of two rival gangs 'The Cutters' and 'The Runners' along with resin casted figurines of the gang members.

Matt Bromley created some very lively paintings which were accompanied by some brilliant severed heads, the trophies of his very cute but deadly hunters.

And here we have people enjoying the show. Thank you to everyone who made it to the opening, it was great to meet so many new people.
The show runs through until the 28th of Janurary in London.

Bloomberg Businessweek

I was commissioned by Bloomberg Businessweek through the YCN to create a piece about anti-thrift. Buyers are being frugal and careful with purchases and the article is about a book encouraging spending to get the economy up and running.

I took a light hearted look at a tricky subject.

On Friday the Untitled Collective invited me as one of the four guest speakers at one of their great events at the Fish Factory in Falmouth. I spoke about what happened to me after graduating and the obstacles I had to deal with to become an illustrator.

Peninsula Arts - Plymouth Window Project

My image 'Happy' is going to be on display in Plymouth town centre with a variety of my recently graduated illustrator friends.

Me, Ben Aslett, Sam Rennocks, Joe Lyward, Josh Neal, Jake Rowlinson and Rob Hodgson all worked together for Peninsula Arts in Plymouth on a project to brighten up a disused Woolworths store by having our artwork blown up to cover the shops windows.

Ikanpaos Collective Logo Design

Recently I was commissioned to design a logo for the Ikanpaos Collective.

The idea behind the collective is to be a creative space which runs on passion and strives on collaborations. Where different people with different set of skills, talents and passion can come in and work together on different projects and come up with a product that we could all be proud of.

Here is an alternative eye-popping version of the logo too.

75 Peters exhibition

To celebrate the british architect Peter Cook's 75th birthday the Adam and Eve Projects are putting on the exhibition '75 Peters' where 75 artists and illustrators have each created a portrait of Peter Cook and I was invited to take part.

Here is my submission here. I wanted to focus on what I would consider his most important tools, his eyes. I created this before seeing the invitation poster, but they work well together!
Each artwork will be auctioned off for charity.

Raw Design Studio - Birthday

Over 70 pieces of birthday-themed artwork from designers and illustrators across the world were featured in the exhibition. Each unique canvas was up for sale at £15, with all profits going to our local charity for children and families, the Wood Street Mission.

Comic in McSweeney's 38

I have redrawn and coloured 'The Jungle' with a different ending for McSweeney's 38. It was a fantastic suprise to be asked to contribute to McSweeney's and I jumped at the offer.
The comic is built up from 3 pantones and is 16 pages.
It's really cool how they put it all together, my comic is slightly smaller than the rest of the book and is snuggly fastened into it.

Art Trek 8 Opening

On Saturday, Art Trek 8 kicked off in Antwerp, Belgium, where I had some of my paintings on show.
I wish I could split into two, because then I could have visited Belgium for the show, but I was at the Big Chill Festival on the weekend.
Thank you to everyone who came to the show and a big thank you to everyone who put together the show and hung my work because I couldn't make it.

Fight! # 1 introduces us to Lou (short for Lucifer), a British professional wrestler in his mid thirties. His career as the malevolent Diablo could never have been better, he has hundreds of expectant wrestling fans that queue every Thursday to watch him battle his fierce enemy Savior – the long locked, golden-skinned ‘good guy’. But Lou isn’t quite happy… You see Lou, both on and off stage, has the appearance of a devil. But in reality you could not find a milder mannered or gentle creature. Lou desperately yearns to be appreciated for who he is and not what he looks like, unfortunately being bright red and having horns doesn’t do him any favours.

The Big Chill Work

I've been keeping this quiet for the last few months. I've been working with the Big Chill this year to create promotional material for them for all of their events throughout the year.
This is one of the posters that has gone into print so far. I picked this up in the Big Chill Bar in Bristol. There is a different poster with events and dates printed on the back for every month, so keep an eye out for new posters!
I'm the illustrator in residence this year for the Big Chill, so there is a lot more work for me to post up, watch this space!
I've also answered an interview over at the Big Chill website about my work. Check out all of the little icons on the site, I had to make them too.

Origin Coffee

That's Life! Exhibition - The End

Last week saw the end of my show 'That's Life!' in the R.A.G.E at Dublin last week. Here are a few pictures from the opening night for those of you who missed it.

The magician who curated the whole show Paul G. Smyth standing back after all his hard work.

The coolest thing about downstairs was an arcade machine that had access to loads of old CPS2 and Neo Geo games. 4 credits for 20 cents! Bargain.
A big thank you to Nicholas and Paul for making this come together and to everyone who came along and showed your support. I had a great time!

Bristol Bookfair

Hey everyone, this is a little late, but I'm back from my weekend Bristol visit where I was selling at the Bristol Artist's Book Fair.
Me and my friends all set up a stall to sell our books, prints, badges and handmade goodies.
It was great to see some familiar faces and meet new people, thank you to everyone who supported us!
I haven't sold at the fair since leaving uni with my friends, and it was great to see how our work had changed and progressed and how we represented ourselves now.
Here's hoping I can take part next year!

Elephant Graveyard Exhibition

Pin-up poster created for the Spera Anthology. Spera is the brain child of Josh Tierney.

I love medieval beasts and Youkai. Hieronymus Bosch is a huge influence too.
I love how Gustave Doré creates his lines in his work, and all of this has influenced this piece.

It's been two weeks since the Cornwall 24 hour comic challenge in Wadebridge and my hand has recovered from all that drawing! The organisers Phil Rushworth and Tom Sharpe have kindly scanned my comic, and it is now avaliable to read here.
There are two more events lined up at the Eden Project and Liskeard. I will be helping out with comic workshops at the Eden Project on the 4th of February.

24 hour comic challenge

I will be taking part in the 24hr comic challenge in Wadebridge town hall in Cornwall this week on the 13th. My friend Ben Wright will be taking part too.

I took part last year at Falmouth and these were the results.

Nobrow Graphic Cosmogony - 'Dust to Dust'

My comic 'Dust to dust' appears in Nobrow's Graphic Cosmonogy Anthology which is out now.
It's full of great artists who have been given 7 pages each to explain in their own way, the creation of the universe.

The Dama Aflita Gallery are having a group show in December in Porto, Portugal.
The show is celebrating 2 years since the gallery first opened and the group show consists of:
André Alves, André Lemos, Catarina Azevedo, Craig Atkinson, Filipe Abranches, Jack Teagle, Júlio Dolbeth, Luis Urculo, Marta Monteiro, Paulo Patrício, Pedro Zamith, Rui Vitorino Santos, Salão Coboi e Tae Stylin.
The show will be on from the 4th of December through to the 15th of January.

Here is one of the 3 pieces I have produced for the show. The theme is based on the name of the gallery, which translates as 'distressed lady':

A look in the studio

I know a lot of people show their work spaces, but I've been going on and on about showing people where I work for some time. I work in a 8x16 foot old shipping container with my girlfriend Donya Todd on a farm in Cornwall.

So here it is! My side at least anyway. I wanted to focus in on some of the toys I keep hanging about on the bookshelves too. These are only a fraction of what I own. I have some pretty big collections of vintage Star Wars figures, Turtles, Ghostbusters and Thundercats in storage.

Hopefully it's not too messy.

Supersonic Festival - Autumn

Hey everyone, here is some recent work for a show at the Supersonic Festival
I had to create an A2 greyscale image for print based around the theme of 'Autumn'.
I went all out on this, I decided instead of having it enlarge and lose detail that I would draw the poster A2 size. Then, so I had two alternate versions, I coloured it so that when it converted to greyscale the tones would look better.

Here is the finished greyscale version. I removed all tone from the characters to bring them out from the foreground.
If you're going to the supersonic festival, hopefully you'll see the piece there!

Hi there everyone, I've been busy doing lots of different little projects, pitching ideas and paintings, all of which will come to light very soon.
This piece is for Anorak Magazine's 'friendship' issue. It was part of a project to illustrate Oscar Kirk's diary from 1919.
I got to work on the project with lots of great illustrators and was a really fun project.

I'm also experimenting with uploading my images at .png files for blogspot. I've heard that they display a little better on blogger.

Daddy Donkey Kick Ass Mexican Grill

A few months ago Daddy Donkey, a London based Mexican food chain which specialises in amazing fresh burritos commissioned me to create some mexican inspired illustration for their trailers.
I got to work and created some simple and bold lucha libre inspired characters and type faces.

Here is the finished product! My work plastering every square inch of the trailer.

I can't recommend the Daddy D Burritos enough! I sunk my teeth into one the other day and it was the best thing ever!

Sorry for such a long break between posts, I've been busy with various projects. I'm in the process of getting a series of Giclee prints produced, a few gallery shows and some new commercial work.

Anyway, this poster was created for a local gig which has been put together by the Dueling Kazoos. It's great being able to create work locally, plus I got to draw a pirate.

Jeff thinks he is on his way to the Job Centre to pick up his monthly benefit payment when in fact he is about to embark on a quest of Ulyssean proportions. As Jeff slashes and punches his way through the red tape and bureaucracy of the Job Centre’s dungeon of terror, he approaches the terrifying Minotaur whom he must defeat to pick up his next meal ticket. Little does he know that the object of his epic quest is just a bad tempered HR manager with a paper-load the size of a Kraken and a mood to match it.
